Newcastle United ‘plot’ £40m move for former Man City star who scored at St James’ Park last season

Newcastle United have turned their attention to a midfielder that scored against them last season

Newcastle United have emerged as one of the leading contenders to sign Champions League finalist Felix Nmecha from German heavyweights Borussia Dortmund in January. Newcastle currently have a strong midfield featuring Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, Joelinton, Sean Longstaff, Joe Willock and Lewis Miley.

But Eddie Howe still believes the team need a defensive midfielder that can provide extra protection to the backline after a troublesome start to the season which has seen his team concede 21 times in 15 matches – including four against Brentford last time out.

Nmecha, who has been capped three times for Germany at international level, started his career at Manchester City after moving to England from Hamburg at the age of seven. He was an instant hit at academy level for the Sky Blues, and after scoring 15 times in 45 games at Under-23 level was promoted to the first team and played three times across all competitions during the 2020/21 season.

Nmecha was released from Manchester City in 2021 but went on to enjoy huge success in the German Bundesliga with VFL Wolfsburg. In his two seasons at the Volkswagen arena, he racked up 50 appearances – including two in the Champions League where he played alongside his brother Lucas.

Nmecha joined Borussia Dortmund in July 2023 and was a near ever present in the team which reached the Champions League final last term while recording victories over the likes of Newcastle United, PSG, Atletico Madrid and PSV.

The three-time German international was given the Man of the Match award at St James’ Park after scoring the winner against the Magpies last season and has been on the club’s radar ever since, according to reports from Caught Offside.

The outlet understands Newcastle have made the £40m rated midfielder a priority January target to reinvigorate the club’s season after a subdued start but adds that Premier League rivals Manchester United and Aston Villa are also keeping tabs on the midfielder’s availability.
