Newcastle United are still in the market for a centre-back after missing out on priority target Marc Guehi in the summer.
However, Newcastle’s priorities aren’t the same now as they were back then with Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman close to returning to fitness after lengthy layoffs following ACL surgery.
There has been a lack of depth in defence for Newcastle, though, and even with those two players returning, Eddie Howe could definitely still do with another player in to cover, especially a right-sided centre-back given that Jamaal Lascelles, Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth have all passed that 30 mark.
We expect that adding the defender to succeed Schar will likely wait until the summer at least, the opportunity to acquire a relatively cheap defender with bags of Premier League experience has presented itself and Newcastle could be tempted.

Victor Lindelof could be available for around £6m in January
Newcastle, Everton and West Ham are keen on Victor Lindelof
A report from Caught Offside has suggested that Newcastle, Everton and West Ham are both keen on Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof who is set to leave Old Trafford.
The Swedish defender’s contract is up in the summer and he can leave Man United on a free, but they may try and cash in on the 30-year-old in January for around £6 million.
There’s also said to be interest in Lindelof from abroad with AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus, Lazio and Fiorentina all keeping tabs on the situation.
Even at £6m it’s a no from us
We’re not so convinced that Newcastle would be looking at Lindelof if we’re being honest. At 30 years old he’s not the signing we’re looking for as the aim is to find a young defender to succeed Schar and even if we just sign Lindelof on a short-term deal, that’s still using up funds that could have been used to buy a long-term successor.
Also, while Lindelof has 267 games under his belt for Manchester United, he’s never been first-choice, so if he’s not good enough for them, he’s not good enough for us.
The likes of Everton and West Ham like much more likely destinations. We’re shocked to see the Milans and Juventus linked too, if we’re being honest.
It’s a pass from us.
