Dele Alli has released a statement thanking Everton, admitting that “things haven’t worked out” after being allowed to train with his former club.
The 28-year-old’s contract expired at the end of last season, but he has been allowed to use the club’s training facility in the hopes of regaining fitness and earning a new deal.
Speaking to BBC Sounds earlier in the year, Everton Sporting Director Kevin Thelwell said: “We are in a good space now with Tottenham, we have an agreement with those guys about what happens next if we sign him.”
He continued: “He would dearly love to play for Everton in the Premier League and we would dearly love that to happen as well because the boy has had a very difficult time.”
Alli was spotted in the stands at Serie A club Como earlier in the week (December 15) and has reportedly been offered the chance to train with the squad.
According to The Sun, former Arsenal midfielder and current Como manager Cesc Fabregas is a big fan of Alli and would be willing to take a chance on the former England international.

The attacking midfielder endured yet another injury setback while training with Everton earlier in December, sustaining a hamstring injury, after being sidelined for nearly two calendar years.
Alli’s last competitive appearance came while on loan from the Merseyside club at Turkish side Besiktas back in February 2023.
The Friedkin Group finally announced their takeover on Thursday (December 19), ending Farhad Moshiri’s turbulent time at the club.
In a statement released on Instagram, Alli said: “As widely published this week, 2025 may set me on a new path with some exciting opportunities.
“Before any of that happens it’s very important for me to make clear how grateful I am of all the fans, staff and players at Everton FC for the support they have given me.
“It’s been an incredibly tough journey trying to put the final pieces together to regain match fitness and I cannot thank the Everton staff enough for the hard work they have put into this process.
“Unfortunately things haven’t worked out as we all would have hoped and I think it’s the right time for me to turn a new page. I want to wish everyone at this amazing club the very best of luck and hopefully we will see each other again soon.”
Sean Dyche’s side earned some breathing space between them and the relegation zone after their 0-0 draw with Arsenal, sitting three points above Ipswich in 18th with 15.
Chelsea will travel to Goodison Park on Sunday (December 22) know that a win could see them leapfrog Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.
