Paul Robinson described the playing style deployed by Everton in their 1-1 draw against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Boxing Day as “ugly”.

Goals from Bernardo Silva and Iliman Ndiaye saw the teams share the spoils in their Premier League clash on Thursday, 26 December.

Robinson noticed that Sean Dyche had set up the Toffees to sit back and hit the hosts on the counter, describing the strategy as “ugly” and “effective” at the same time.

“We’ve seen it already from Everton today, at times it is ugly but they counter and it is effective”, Robinson said on BBC Radio 5 Live, as quoted on BBC Sport’s live blog (26 December, 12:43 pm).

While it is not an attractive playing style, it is easy to see why Dyche is setting his team up in that way at the moment.

It is no secret that December was going to be important for the Toffees.

Although the home against Liverpool was postponed due to unfavourable weather conditions, the Goodison Park outfit have faced two title contenders in Arsenal and Chelsea this month.

The Merseyside-based club would have perhaps not taken a point off both of those teams had Dyche not set the team to play counter-attacking football.

It is also worth noting that the former Burnley boss has had to cope without Everton’s top scorer Dwight McNeil, who has missed the last three games through injury.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s poor run of form which has seen him find the back of the net not even once in 13 league games has also not helped Dyche’s cause.

In other Everton news, the Toffees have contacted this Ligue 1 striker as they look to strengthen their attack.
