West Ham ace Carlos Soler fails to shine against Southampton

West Ham United claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Southampton on Thursday at St Mary’s Stadium.

The Hammers produced a largely underwhelming display, but they still managed to come away with maximum points after Jarrod Bowen’s second-half goal.

The West Ham captain poked the ball in from close range after latching onto Niclas Fullkrug’s flick-on.

Southampton tried hard to make a comeback, but the Irons held on to secure their sixth Premier League win under Julen Lopetegui.

The latest victory means they have climbed above Manchester United to 13th place in the league table.

Carlos Soler fails to prove a point

Lucas Paqueta was suspended for Thursday’s away clash after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season.

Carlos Soler had a brilliant opportunity to prove a point to Lopetegui. But the 27-year-old produced a poor display and was replaced at half-time by Edson Alvarez.

Operating as an attacking midfielder, he showed no creativity and made no driving runs forward.

The Spain international even squandered a brilliant scoring chance by hitting the crossbar in the first-half.

Soler, who technical director Tim Steidten hailed as a really talented player, had just 28 touches and completed 20 of his 24 passes.

The midfielder won just a single duel during the 45 minutes he was on the pitch, and lost the ball on five occasions.

On the back of this display, Soler doesn’t deserve to keep his place in the team for the upcoming clash with Liverpool.

Paqueta’s levels have massively dropped this season, but Lopetegui will likely trust the Brazilian over him for the big game at the weekend.
