Gary Lineker was left impressed by the performance of Jordan Pickford as Everton secured a point away to Manchester City on Boxing Day.
The Toffees secured yet another precious point against top-flight heavyweight having secured goalless draws versus Arsenal and Chelsea, with Iliman Ndiaye scoring the goal for Everton in the 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium on 26 December.
However, it was the penalty save from Pickford that not only earned the Toffees the point but also caught the attention of Lineker on Match of the Day (26 December), who labelled the England goalkeeper as “underrated”.
“I wonder if he gets perhaps the respect he deserves as a goalkeeper,” Lineker said.
“I think he’s slightly underrated because he’s remarkably consistent.”
Jordan Pickford deserves more credit at Everton
Lineker is spot on with what he said about Pickford, he absolutely doesn’t get the respect he deserves. That’s not to say he isn’t respected, but he is arguably one of the best ‘keepers in the division and very few are keen to acknowledge that.
Via Match of the Day, only David Raya has kept more Premier League clean sheets than Pickford since the start of the 2023-24 season and that is a testament to his incredible shot-stopping ability which is a big part of the reason Everton are still a top division side.
Matched with his remarkable level of distribution, his importance on Merseyside cannot be underestimated and if anything, it needs further recognition.
While a rebuild at Everton is imminent, Pickford is one of few players who will receive zero scrutiny for their involvement going forward.
If Everton are to avoid relegation this season, Pikcofrd will be paramount to that and with performances like the one against Man City, they are in extremely safe hands.
