Newcastle United are ready to sell Kieran Trippier in the January transfer window, but head coach Eddie Howe has other ideas.
That is according to a report in The Sun, which has claimed that the Newcastle hierarchy want to cash in on Trippier in the middle of the season.
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) “want to inject fresh blood” and also need to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, and one of the players they think is dispensible is Trippier.
The former Tottenham Hotspur right-back is earning £200,000 per week in salary at Newcastle at the moment. Trippier is also 34 now.
Tino Livramento is the first-choice right-back for Newcastle right now. Trippier, who is out of contract at the Magpies in the summer of 2026, has made just five starts in the Premier League so far this season.
While Howe sees Trippier as a back-up right-back, according to The Sun, the Newcastle manager “would prefer to keep” the 34-year-old Englishman. PIF, though, want to sell him this month. A number of European clubs are keen on Trippier.

Trippier is past his prime now, but Newcastle must resist the temptation to cash in on the former Manchester City prospect right now.
Newcastle are in the running for the Premier League top four, and Trippier could play a big role. Howe’s side are only three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.
The Englishman is hugely experienced, and he could be important in certain big games in the coming weeks and months. He has made a total of 190 appearances in the Premier League so far in his career. The full-back has scored six goals, given 35 assists and kept 47 clean sheets in those matches.
Trippier always gives his all and is a senior player in the squad. It is important for Newcastle to have leaders in the dressing room, especially for the second half of the season.
