Five players Newcastle United simply must axe in 2025 including £120k-a-week star

Newcastle United have no choice but to refresh Eddie Howe’s squad over 2025.
Over the entirety of 2024, Newcastle United have failed to improve Eddie Howe’s starting XI. The January window is always difficult to do business in, but the summer was truly disappointing for the Magpies.

Newcastle ended the summer with a net profit yet the Profit and Sustainability Rules continue to hamstring the club’s growth and budget.
There are no excuses for Newcastle and sporting director Paul Mitchell in 2025 not to freshen up a squad that Howe recently called “stale”.
Not only does that include lots of incomings, but also players headed for the exit door. Here are five players currently at Newcastle that need to be axed over 2025.

Callum Wilson
In the lead-up to January, Callum Wilson has been linked with a move away from Newcastle with Premier League clubs showing an interest in the 32-year-old.
However, Wilson has suffered a new injury having already missed the first three months of the season. If he is injured over January, an exit is unlikely.
But Newcastle cannot afford to keep hold of a player in his twilight years who is regularly unavailable. Callum Wilson needs to be sold in 2025, even if the club has to wait until the summer.
A new striker should be targeted to replace Wilson to help support Alexander Isak up front.
Kieran Trippier
Tino Livramento has been superb for Newcastle this season and has made the right-back spot his own this season.
As a result, Kieran Trippier has had to accept a reduced role this season. He is still yet to play a full 90 minutes.
It was no secret that Trippier wanted to leave Newcastle in the summer but could not get a deal over the line quickly enough.
Trippier earns £120,000 per week at St James’ Park, so removing him from the wage bill would also be hugely beneficial for PSR.
Miguel Almiron
Similarly to Trippier, Miguel Almiron has already come very close to leaving Newcastle in recent transfer windows.
Almiron was heavily linked to Saudi Arabia and an exit is still very much on the cards with multiple clubs ready to sign Almiron in January.
His sale will be crucial from a PSR perspective with funds raised going towards new signings. He has fallen down Howe’s pecking order and a new right winger is the top priority in 2025.
Matt Targett
Matt Targett is yet to make a single senior appearance for Newcastle this season and, frankly, it’s astonishing he’s still on the books at the club.
He is earning a whopping £100,000 per week at St James’ Park, and that money could be used elsewhere to strengthen the squad. Selling Targett as soon as possible should be a top priority for club chiefs.
Sean Longstaff
Perhaps the most controversial name on the list is Sean Longstaff.
Longstaff is open to joining the MLS and following in the footsteps of his brother. While he has been a fairly regular starter this season – Newcastle have plenty of depth in midfield with Lewis Miley also knocking on the door.
If Newcastle need a fairly significant sale to raise funds for PSR, Longstaff fits the bill.
