Newcastle United are set to complete a deal for Republic of Ireland youth international Kyle Fitzgerald.
The winger spent time on trial at Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle in the summer, and is understood to have agreed to join the latter. According to reports, Fitzgerald’s move from Galway United will become official when he turns 18 later this month.
Fitzgerald has made two senior appearances for Galway’s first-team and represents the Republic of Ireland at youth level. The Magpies’ academy ranks has a strong Irish contingent, including the likes of Alex Murphy, Cathal Heffernan, Reece Byrne and Rory Finneran, who arrived from Blackburn Rovers in August.
Newcastle have significantly bolstered their academy in the three years since Mike Ashley sold the club to the PIF-led consortium. Not only have United poached other clubs’ top talents but fought off strong competition from rivals too.
It was announced in September that Newcastle had agreed a deal to sign highly-rated Georgian forward Vakhtang Salia from Dinamo Tbilisi when he turns 18 in August. NewcastleWorld revealed at the time that several European clubs had scouted Salia. Arsenal, at one stage, thought they had won the race.
“We’re delighted to get ahead of a number of other top clubs to sign Vakhtang,” said Newcastle sporting director Paul Mitchell. “Scouting and recruiting emerging talent is an essential part of building a sustainable future, particularly within the current PSR framework, so the market is fiercely competitive.
“We continue to scout extensively, both domestically and overseas, with a view to securing players who can come through our talent pathway and, ideally, become part of the first team in future.
“We look forward to working with Vakhtang and wish him every success during his remaining time with Dinamo Tbilisi.”
