Incoming sporting director Paul Mitchell, who has replaced Dan Ashworth, has been stinging with his criticism of the transfer strategy at St James’ Park.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (16 September) that Newcastle boss Howe still has the backing of senior club chiefs despite a recent boardroom bust-up.
Mitchell has claimed the club’s previous transfer strategy was “unclear” and “unfit for purpose” and accused the Magpies of overpaying for some signings.

Howe will now have less input into the club’s business than before, with most of the Englishman’s focus to go on coaching the players at his disposal.
The former Bournemouth manager has vehemently defended his transfer record in recent days.
He said: “I’m very, very proud of every single player we signed during that period. It’s very easy to look back at any transfer window and make a judgment on the players you signed three years down the line. Our objective at the time was to stay in the Premier League and, when you look back, that work was good.”
Newcastle
Newcastle endured a frustrating summer transfer window which ultimately ended with them failing to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace – or a suitable alternative.
However, the Magpies have started the 2024-25 campaign in fine form – picking up 10 points from their first four Premier League games.
