England triumphed to a 5-0 win over Serbia in Belgrade on Tuesday evening to put them within touching distance of the 2026 World Cup, in what is a move in the right direction for Thomas Tuchel after a slow start to life in the Three Lions dugout – and one star in particular has earned praise from journalists and fans alike.
A quickfire double just after the half-hour mark from Harry Kane and Noni Madueke, the latter scoring his first for the Three Lions, saw England breeze into a 2-0 lead after an extremely strong start that was filled with possession and chances galore. Ezri Konsa added to that with a first England goal of his own just after the break, as well as centre-back partner Marc Guehi also getting in on the act with his first goal, before Marcus Rashford rounded off the rout from the spot.

Various England stars were incredible on a huge night in Belgrade, and Madueke, Kane and Konsa will be the headline acts for days to come. But one other player in Morgan Rogers rightfully earned praise after a solid performance.
The Aston Villa attacker played a delightful through ball that Anthony Gordon almost capitalised upon, a sweeping effort that would not have looked out of place on an end-of-season highlight reel, and he did so again for Madueke’s goal which put England into a commanding lead.
Rogers has made a name for himself at Villa Park after joining from Middlesbrough almost two years ago, with his jinking runs and playmaking abilities seeing him score 17 goals and 17 assists in 73 appearances for the West Midlands club.
That was upheld in Belgrade, and it led to praise from journalists. Simon Collings of The Standard noted him for his touch for Madueke’s goal, stating: “That touch from Morgan Rogers. Woof.”
Meanwhile, BBC Sport reporter Simon Stone gave him added praise, adding: “Excellent by England. Morgan Rogers flick superb.”

It wasn’t just journalists who were impressed. Fans watching from home were also mesmerised by the former West Bromwich Albion starlet, who has come into his own for England in recent times after Gareth Southgate departed.
One fan began on X (formerly Twitter): “Morgan Rogers giving Tuchel some issues (in a good way)”, whilst another stated: “build this system around Morgan Rogers oh my lord. I am in awe.”
Another fan tweeted: “Morgan Rogers you are a phenomenal footballer”, as another posted: “Morgan Rogers is a very good footballer. Generational.”
More fans flooded in with hype, adding: “Morgan rogers is top drawer”, with another calling him “ridiculously good”.
One punter even labelled him as insane, writing: “Why did no one sign Morgan Rogers??? This guy is insane!!!”, and another fan couldn’t help but wax lyrical, typing: “The touch from Morgan Rogers to get the assist for the goal was UNBELIEVABLY good.”
Tuchel began his stint with wins over Albania and Latvia at Wembley, failing to concede before beating Andorra 1-0 in Barcelona. A shock 3-1 loss to Senegal in Nottingham gave doubters over his future, whilst a 2-0 win over Andorra on Saturday did little to boost hopes that he can go on to win trophies – but tonight’s performance with Rogers in his ranks will have done him the world of good.

England thrashed Serbia 5-0 in Belgrade.
England fans have named the one player they think must start at the World Cup after the 5-0 win over Serbia in Belgrade.
Thomas Tuchel’s side produced a commanding display to win their fourth consecutive World Cup qualifier.
The Three Lions will qualify for the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico if they collect three points from their final three qualifiers in October and November.
Serbia are arguably England’s strongest opposition in Group K but had just one shot on goal over the 90 minutes.
Nottingham Forest defender Nikola Milenkovic was shown a straight red card at 3-0 down to cap off a miserable night for Dragan Stojkovic’s side.
Tuchel made four changes from Saturday’s 2-0 win over Andorra, with Tino Livramento, Ezri Konsa, Morgan Rogers and Anthony Gordon coming into the side.
The England starting XI therefore had a much more youthful look about it, with U21 Euros winner Elliot Anderson making his second consecutive start in the centre of midfield.
As per OptaJoe, Anderson ranked highest for both successful passes and final third passes over the two matches out of any player in the Three Lions squad.

The Forest midfielder was called up to the squad amid Jude Bellingham’s absence due to injury – and fans think he should be firmly in contention to start England’s opening World Cup game next year.
Taking to Twitter, one fan wrote: “Elliot Anderson is too good, we need him for the World Cup. Perfect partner for Rice in this set up because he’s comfortable at everything.”
A second added: “Elliot Anderson looks like the missing piece from that midfield.”
A third enthused; “Elliot Anderson is making that position in England’s team his, just as he did with us. Sensational player.”
And a fourth wrote: “The whole world now seeing what we see every week. Elliot Anderson is the best midfielder in the Premier League.”
Speaking after the 5-0 win in Belgrade, Tuchel said: “Elliot deserved, first of all, to be with us because he did excellent for his club, and for the U21s – that was very impressive.

“When I saw him perform in the U21s final, I had the idea that maybe he can be a 6 and maybe play him to his strengths.

“Now it’s on him to keep it going, and to keep also the lightness with him, and the freedom with him that he needs for his game. He’s just a very, very good football player, and a very good team-mate in camp.”
