The forgotten man has only had a handful of appearances since leaving Ibrox in the summer.

As January looms, Danny Rohl must now look ahead to his first transfer window in the Rangers hot-seat.

Last weekend’s goalless draw with Falkirk, mixed with the underwhelming draw to 10-man Braga in Europe, further highlighted the need for January reinforcements in Govan. The Light Blues currently sit seven points behind Celtic in the league and nine adrift of Hearts, with a game in hand on the latter.

With a tough run of festive fixtures including away fixtures against Dundee United, Kilmarnock and Hearts, things aren’t getting any easier for the Rangers boss who now has the tough task of keeping his side in the title race, before the window starts.

Lack of attacking intent and creativity is something which Rangers have been heavily criticised for this season, however one of their players, who is out on loan in the Spanish League is struggling for minutes and could be the answer to Danny Rohl’s prayers.

Rohl considers Cortes recall after ‘raised concerns’ at lack of minutes

Rangers winger, Oscar Cortes started his loan spell at Sporting Gijon in September, only a few months after signing for Rangers permanently for £4.5 million from RC Lens. The 21-year old had an injury-plagued loan spell at Ibrox the year before, but when he was fit showed signs of promise.

Cortes was loaned out by Rangers to the Spanish second-tier side to get some more minutes under his belt in a league that’s still competitive, however he has only played 190 minutes for Gijon since September. Spanish digital media website, La Voz de Asturias claim that the Colombian winger may be recalled by Danny Rohl due to his lack of game time.

They say: “Rangers are closely monitoring Oscar Cortés’ situation at Real Sporting de Gijón and although the loan was agreed for the entire 2025/26 season, the winger’s lack of playing time has raised concerns at Ibrox and among the player’s entourage. Cortés turns 22 this week and was hoping for a more prominent role at this stage of the season.”

Novo believes Cortes still has ‘future’ at Ibrox

Former Rangers fan favourite, Nacho Novo, who also had a spell at Sporting Gijon was happy in September when Cortes made the loan move to his former club. Speaking to El Comercio, when asked about Cortes, he said: “he’s a good player. He’s fast, good in one-on-one situations, and a good goal scorer.

“I haven’t been able to see him regularly because he’s had some injuries, but I like him. He’s got something. I spoke to him once when he was here in Glasgow. He’s a very calm kid. I would like to speak to him to tell him he’s joined a very big club and to wish him the best, and that I’m sure he’ll have a good season. He’s a bet for the future for Rangers, and I think he’ll succeed at Sporting. He’ll put in a good performance.”

Despite Novo’s optimism, the young winger is yet to make his mark in a struggling Gijon side, who’ve won just one match in five. Perhaps a trip back to Govan, where he could compete with the likes of Oliver Antman and Mikey Moore for a starting place on the wing would benefit his development.
