Leeds United could look to welcome back one of their former stars in the coming days of the transfer window, according to reports – with Kalvin Phillips potentially leaving Manchester City for his Yorkshire roots, with a deal back to Leeds being rated as having a ‘good chance’.

The report by Leeds United News states that, with just three games gone in the 2025/26 season, the Elland Road outfit have already suffered a mini-injury criss in midfield, which has highlighted a huge need for them to bring recruitments to West Yorkshire with just days left in the window.

Ao Tanaka and Ethan Ampadu have suffered knee injuries, and that could see them miss at least two weeks of action each, leaving them with just Anton Stach, Sean Longstaff and Ilia Gruev to choose from in the centre of the park.

And with recruits needed, a familiar face in Phillips is available. The Englishman has had a dismal three seasons at City after his £45million move from Leeds in the summer of 2022, and that saw him try to turn his form around with loan spells at West Ham United and Ipswich Town – both of which failed.

Having cost so much and with three years left on his contract, finding a suitor for Phillips could be extremely tough – though returning to his safe haven of Elland Road, Phillips would ‘jump’ at the chance to come home to Thorp Arch, where he made his name and learned his trade from the age of 14.

Journalist Graeme Bailey added that there is a good chance the midfielder ends up at Leeds, stating:

Leeds would have to tackle Phillips’ estimated £140,000-a-week wages, meaning he’d need to take a payout – and his injury record isn’t great. But as a player who knows the club inside out, it could be a smart addition.

234 appearances for the Whites saw him become a key part of their revival in the Premier League, playing formative parts in their rapid rise under Marcelo Bielsa, which earned him his England call-ups and a move to the then-Premier League champions – winning the treble in his first season at the Etihad Stadium.

However, he will be remembered most for his spell-binding passing displays in Leeds’ halcyon days of a mid-table, top-flight finish under Bielsa – seeing him become a starting player for England alongside Declan Rice at EURO 2020, where the Three Lions reached their first final since the famous 1966 World Cup win.
