Newcastle United are moving ever closer to their first signing of the summer after submitting an improved offer for Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga.
After an initial £45million bid was rejected last month, Chronicle Live understands an improved £50million offer had been put to the City Ground outfit, via intermediaries, earlier this week. The latest move sees the total package stand at £55million when potential bonuses are taken into account.
Chronicle Live understands personal terms are not yet agreed between Newcastle and the 23-year-old, who is under contract at Forest until 2028. However, that particular aspect of the transfer is not expected to be an issue.
Talks are expected to continue into the weekend with growing confidence a deal can be done. Elanga is currently on holiday after featuring for Sweden during the most recent international break.
The forward, who is close to Newcastle hitman and fellow countryman Alexander Isak, has been spending recent days with another Magpies star in the form of William Osula. The duo have also had tongues wagging with ongoing social media comments back and forth on Instagram posts in recent weeks.
Elanga, pressed on Newcastle speculation by Swedish media last month, has continuously kept tight-lipped over the prospect of a St James’ Park move.

Should all parties come to an agreement, Elanga would become Newcastle’s second most expensive transfer of all time. Forest paid Manchester United £15m for his signature, back in 2023, and the Red Devils are expected to pocket 15% of the profit made from his sale.
After years of PSR-related transfer struggles, Newcastle have been expected to splash the cash this summer. However, to date, Eddie Howe’s men have missed out on key attacking targets such as Bryan Mbeumo, Liam Delap and Joao Pedro.
Work has been undertaken behind the scenes to ensure Howe is backed before September 1 and a deal for James Trafford remains at an advanced stage. There is also hunger to sign additional central defensive reinforcements.
Elanga’s arrival would bring a sense of relief to an anxious fanbase, who have spent the opening month of the summer window watching Newcastle’s targets go elsewhere.
