Thiaw, 24, has agreed personal terms and is set to complete a medical.
The Toon are in desperate need of a new central defender with Sven Botman enduring a string of injuries since arriving in the Premier League.
Every other first-team centre-back Newcastle have available to them is aged 31 or over – Dan Burn, 33, Fabian Schar, 33, and Jamaal Lascelles, 31.
Thiaw rose through the ranks at Schalke, making 64 appearances for the first-team before being snapped up by AC Milan in 2022.
