Sunderland have reached an agreement with RB Leipzig for the signing of Dutch defender Lutsharel Geertruida on a loan deal with an option to buy.
The Netherlands international is in Sunderland on Monday ahead of undergoing his medical at the club.
The 25-year-old only moved to Leipzig in the summer of 2024, moving from Eredivisie side Feyenoord for €20million, but has fallen out of contention at the RB Arena under new head coach Ole Werner.
He made 35 appearances in all competitions last season — including eight in the Champions League — for the German team as they finished seventh in the Bundesliga.
Sunderland have already signed 12 players across this summer, although Chelsea are in talks with Sunderland to recall striker Marc Guiu from his loan at the north-east club.
Defenders Nordi Mukiele, Omar Alderete, Reinildo Mandava and Arthur Musuaku are among the arrivals into Regis Le Bris’ squad.
Sunderland have won six points from their opening three Premier League matches, including wins over West Ham United and Brentford.
