Newcastle fans create electric atmosphere ahead of Champions League clash with Barcelona
Newcastle United are facing Barcelona in the Champions League.
Newcastle United fans turned out en masse to support their team in the opening of the Champions League campaign.
On Thursday evening, Eddie Howe’s men welcomed Spanish La Liga giants Barcelona to St. James’ Park as they embarked on their European adventure.
Before kick-off, the atmosphere was simply electrifying, as Newcastle fans created an incredible buzz.
As the players took to the pitch and the Champions League anthem was played, fans waved black, white and gold flags, while a giant cheer unfolded in the stands.
For years, St. James’ Park has earned a reputation as one of the most hostile stadiums for away teams.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, former Aston Villa player Dion Dublin said:
“This is what this football club does. When they come together, they do it with all their heart. Black and white jerseys everywhere. The fans will do their bit. The noise levels are unbelievable.
The way these fans are waving their flags, this game means everything to them. They want to get over the hurdle. The noise in here is incredible, they want tonight to be special — and it will be, especially with a win.”

Strongly supported by their fans, Newcastle started the match brilliantly, exerting great pressure on the visitors.
Anthony Gordon wasted a golden chance in the opening minutes to put Newcastle 1-0 up, before Marcus Rashford missed a chance to give Barcelona the lead.
