Newcastle Open Talks to Sign £100m ‘Superstar’ Ahead of Potential Summer Move

Newcastle United have entered talks to sign Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, who is attracting the interest of a host of Premier League clubs ahead of the summer transfer window, according to a report from TEAMtalk.

The Magpies could be in the market for plenty of reinforcements in the summer after a disappointing season so far. Newcastle currently sit in ninth position, and they’ll need to step things up if they want to qualify for Europe this campaign.

Eddie Howe recently spoke out in the media, suggesting that his side were unlikely to bring in any reinforcements in the winter, with the Magpies perhaps looking to keep their powder dry for a big summer.

“We have the players that we have, and we have to find a solution with those players. There’s no point me thinking we need another type of player at this moment because it’s not going to happen. The next chance we’ll really have to change the squad will be the summer.”

It’s claimed that the England international is now set to leave in the summer transfer window, with a host of Premier League clubs vying for his signature.

It’s claimed that Wharton could cost as little as £65m or as much as £100m later this year, perhaps depending on how many clubs are competing to sign him. Palace will likely want a bidding war to take place if they are to sanction a sale in the summer, which could see his valuation rocket.

It’s also claimed that Wharton could prioritise a move to a European-chasing club, meaning Newcastle need to pull their fingers out.

Newcastle Could Struggle in Wharton Race

With multiple Premier League clubs in the race to secure Wharton’s signature, it might not be easy for Newcastle to convince the England international to make the move to St James’ Park. Newcastle already have the likes of Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, and Joelinton as midfield options, so spending up to £100m might not be the best play for the Magpies.

Wharton, described as a ‘superstar’, could have the majority of the Premier League chasing him in the summer if he becomes available, leaving Newcastle in a difficult position. Eddie Howe’s side will certainly need to improve, as they currently sit outside of the European places.
