Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has strongly criticised the decision to disallow a Newcastle United goal scored by defender Dan Burn in their match against Manchester City, calling it an “obvious mistake” by the officials.
The incident occurred during a heated Premier League encounter at Etihad stadium, where Newcastle pushed for a crucial result. Burn appeared to have bundled the ball over the line in a goalmouth scramble, only for VAR to intervene and rule it out—reportedly for offside.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch, Gallagher didn’t hold back. “This was a clear error,” he said. “From the angles available, Burn’s position was marginal at worst, and the contact—if any—wasn’t sufficient to overturn the on-field decision. VAR overreached here; it’s not a clear and obvious error to disallow it. The goal should have stood.”
Gallagher highlighted how such calls frustrate fans and players alike, especially in high-stakes games involving title challengers like Man City. He pointed out inconsistencies in VAR application, noting that similar scrambles have been allowed in other matches this season.
