Unai Emery made three changes to his Aston Villa side for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Burnley at Turf Moor as the visitors looked to continue their strong run of form.
Tyrone Mings, Ian Maatsen and Ross Barkley were all brought into the starting XI for the encounter, with Emery rotating his squad following Thursday night’s dramatic Europa League semi-final victory over Nottingham Forest.
The trio replaced Pau Torres, Lucas Digne and Emi Buendía, who all dropped to the bench after featuring heavily in Villa’s memorable European triumph earlier in the week. Emery’s decision reflected the demanding schedule Villa have faced in recent weeks as they continue competing on multiple fronts late into the season.
Villa arrived at Turf Moor sitting fifth in the Premier League table and aiming to strengthen their push for Champions League qualification. Confidence within the squad remained high following their impressive run of results, with Emery’s side winning their previous three meetings against Burnley and remaining unbeaten in their last five clashes with the Clarets.
The inclusion of Mings added further experience and physicality to Villa’s backline, while Maatsen’s return offered fresh energy on the left flank. Barkley’s introduction into midfield also provided additional control and composure as Villa looked to dominate possession against Vincent Kompany’s side.
Already relegated Burnley entered the contest playing for pride in front of their home supporters, but Villa were fully aware of the dangers posed by a side with little pressure on their shoulders.
