Emery Wants Him Back: Aston Villa Make Official Move to Re-Sign Marcus Rashford
Aston Villa have made an official move to bring Marcus Rashford back to Villa Park, and the timing could not be more interesting.
The 28-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Villa Park before heading to Barcelona on a season-long deal in the summer of 2025. That short stint in the Midlands left a strong impression on Unai Emery, and the Villa boss has clearly not forgotten it. Rashford flourished under Emery during that loan spell, scoring four goals and providing six assists in 17 appearances. Not earth-shattering numbers, but enough to show what the player is capable of in the right environment.
Since leaving Villa, Rashford has been nothing short of brilliant in Spain. In a LaLiga-winning campaign at Camp Nou, Rashford returned 28 goal contributions across all competitions, operating at roughly a goal contribution per 90 minutes even without always being guaranteed a starting spot. That is serious output for a player many had written off not long ago.
So why is a return to Villa even on the table? It comes down to money and stubbornness. Despite Rashford producing one of the best seasons of his career, Barcelona are reluctant to trigger the £24m buy option in his loan agreement with Manchester United. The Catalan club want another loan deal. United want a clean, full-price sale. Sources continue to stress that Manchester United will NOT soften their stance and accept a second loan. That deadlock is exactly what is opening the door for Villa.
Emery has never hidden his admiration for what Rashford can offer, having previously said he had “big” potential. Villa are prepared to make a bid for the player, and their Champions League status strengthens their hand considerably. They can offer elite European football, a familiar manager, a system Rashford has already thrived in, and the financial resources to compete.
The case for this deal makes real sense on paper. Rashford knows the club, knows the manager, and knows what is expected of him. Emery, more than almost anyone else in management right now, knows how to get the best out of him. With Champions League football secured and a European final on the horizon, Aston Villa are entering one of the most important summers of their project.
The one complication is Rashford himself. He currently has little desire to return to England this summer and his intention is to explore all options to remain at Camp Nou. He wants Barcelona, and that preference is clear.
But football is unpredictable. If Barcelona cannot find a workable financial solution with United, Rashford will need a Plan B fast. And as things stand, Villa Park, Champions League football, and a manager who got the best out of him once before is about as attractive as any alternative gets.
