FURIOUS FANS DEMAND ALAN SHEARER BE SACKED FROM SKY SPORTS IMMEDIATELY AFTER HIS SHOCKING COMMENTS IN THE WAKE OF CELTIC’S 3-1 TITLE WIN OVER HEARTS — KRIS BOYD’S EXPLOSIVE RESPONSE GOES VIRAL
Alan Shearer has found himself at the centre of a massive storm this week after comments he made about Celtic’s Scottish Premiership title win over Hearts went viral for all the wrong reasons, sparking an angry backlash from fans who are now calling for him to be removed from his punditry role.
Celtic sealed the title with a 3-1 victory over Hearts at Celtic Park on the final day, but the win did not arrive without controversy. The drama had actually started days earlier, when a late VAR-awarded penalty in Celtic’s 3-2 win over Motherwell proved pivotal to the title race outcome. Referee John Beaton was called to the monitor deep into second-half stoppage time after VAR flagged a possible handball by Motherwell’s Sam Nicholson. The challenge was deemed a handball, a penalty was awarded, and Celtic scored to win 3-2. That decision effectively handed Celtic the momentum going into the final day showdown.
Shearer, speaking on The Rest is Football podcast alongside Gary Lineker, did not hold back. He said: “People’s livelihoods are on the line here, by the way. People haven’t seen their club win a trophy, perhaps ever. Yet that title up in Scotland was decided by that decision. I am not even involved in it, and I don’t watch a lot of Scottish football, but clearly, this season, it has been really interesting because of what Hearts have done. For that decision to go for Celtic, as it did. No, I don’t accept it.”
Lineker echoed the sentiment, claiming the penalty had cost Hearts the title. Celtic supporters were furious. For a pundit of Shearer’s standing to dismiss their title win as something handed to them by officials, ignoring the fact that Celtic still had to beat Hearts on the final day regardless, was seen as deeply disrespectful.
Social media erupted almost instantly. Fans flooded the comments sections on Sky Sports’ platforms demanding answers, with many calling for Shearer to face consequences for his remarks. “Tasteless. Comments like this need to be addressed,” wrote one supporter. “Hope Sky sack him for this one. I don’t find it funny one bit,” said another. A third posted: “It’s unfortunate that you still think resorting to this type of stereotype is funny and acceptable.”
Into that storm stepped Kris Boyd. The Sky Sports Scotland pundit, not always a Celtic ally, had already made his position on the controversial penalty clear during the Motherwell game. Boyd appeared on Sky Sports Scotland saying: “It’s three massive calls in the last few games. There will be serious questions asked about it. Rightfully so.”But it was his broader pushback against the narrative that Celtic did not deserve their title that caught fire online and sent his response viral within hours.
Shearer had also posted on social media: “But we were told it was for absolute howlers ONLY and they WON’T re-referee and maximum benefit and minimum interference. The post only added fuel to the growing anger directed at him.
Celtic fans are not buying the idea that one VAR call hands you a championship. Their side still had to show up at Celtic Park on the final day and put Hearts away. They did exactly that, winning 3-1 to clinch the title on merit in front of their own supporters.
The calls for Shearer’s removal are growing louder by the hour. Whether Sky Sports respond remains to be seen. One thing is certain: the controversy surrounding this title is far from over.
