Before the 2026 World Cup gets underway, Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes has strengthened his case to be a guaranteed starter for Brazil after producing another outstanding display against Egypt.
The Magpies midfielder opened the scoring in Brazil’s 2-1 friendly victory in Cleveland, Ohio, continuing the impressive form that helped Newcastle secure another successful campaign. Lining up alongside Casemiro in midfield, Guimaraes wasted little time making an impact.
After just seven minutes, he won possession from Egypt midfielder Mohanad Lasheen on the edge of the penalty area before driving forward and curling a superb right-footed effort beyond goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir.
Brazil’s advantage was short-lived, however, as Mostafa Zico equalised following a mistake from Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos. The Selecao continued to dominate and created several chances through Vinicius Junior and Barcelona forward Raphinha.
The winning goal eventually arrived in the second half when teenage sensation Endrick found the net after coming off the bench. Brazil boss Carlo Ancelotti made several substitutions during the game, with Guimaraes making way at half-time after an influential first-half performance.
Following the match, the Newcastle star celebrated the result and his goal with an emotional message on social media.
“Victory, goal and a great performance by the whole team. This is the mentality we need from now on. Saturday it begins. Let’s go, Brazil,” he posted.
Ancelotti also hinted that he already knows the team he will select for Brazil’s World Cup opener against Morocco on June 13, with Guimaraes looking almost certain to start.
Brazil have been drawn in Group C and will also face Scotland and Haiti during the opening stage as they chase another World Cup triumph.
