Villa’s 2–1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur has already raised concerns, not just because of the result but the performance itself. Emery’s decision to rotate heavily drew scrutiny, with many questioning the strength of the starting XI in such a crucial fixture. While the move may have been influenced by the looming Europa League semi-final, it ultimately backfired.

McCoist did not hide his concern at the prospect of losing him. He described a potential departure as “bordering on a disaster,” underlining just how central Emery has become to Villa’s progress.
