Aston Villa are reportedly considering a summer move for Newcastle United winger Harvey Barnes following his impressive performances in this season’s Champions League.
Unai Emery is preparing for another campaign in Europe’s elite competition after guiding Villa to Europa League glory and a fourth-place Premier League finish. However, uncertainty surrounding Morgan Rogers’ future could force Villa to strengthen their attacking options during the transfer window.
Rogers enjoyed a standout campaign and was named Europa League Player of the Season, but speculation over a potential big-money move continues to grow. Former Villa defender Alan Hutton recently admitted the club could consider selling if a huge offer arrives, with reports suggesting bids in the region of £80million may test Villa’s resolve despite the England international being under contract until 2031.
Should Rogers leave, Villa are believed to view Barnes as an ideal replacement due to his proven Premier League and Champions League pedigree.
According to reports, Villa are now plotting a move for the Newcastle star, who registered six goals and four assists in 12 Champions League appearances this season. Barnes particularly impressed during Newcastle’s knockout clash against Barcelona, scoring and creating chances across both legs while consistently troubling the Spanish giants’ defence.
Newcastle reportedly value the winger at around £38million after signing him from Leicester City. However, their stance on a potential sale could depend on other transfer activity this summer, including uncertainty surrounding Anthony Gordon’s future.
The 28-year-old is also said to be open to the idea of moving closer to family, which could make Villa Park an attractive destination.
Barnes has earned praise throughout his career for his attacking style and eye for goal. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe previously described him as an “incredible player” and admitted the club missed his quality during injury setbacks.
Villa believe his pace, experience and attacking versatility could make him a valuable addition to Emery’s squad next season.
